The Yard

About the Yard

The SJI K9 Detection Club, a local nonprofit dedicated to strengthening relationships between dogs and their handlers, is pleased to announce the launch of a new fee‑for‑use, private dog training and exercise yard at 265 Price Street in Friday Harbor. Operated through a partnership with the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center (JLSFRC), the securely fenced yard fills a long‑standing gap in the San Juan Island canine community.

Our Mission

Until now, San Juan Island offered no enclosed space where dogs and handlers could train or exercise off‑leash without the risk of interference from unfamiliar dogs. The new yard, at 265 Price Street in Friday Harbor, provides a safe, structured environment for focused activities such as recall training, agility, rally, nose work, frisbee, ball‑herding, and instructor‑led classes.

“OurTag (left) and Milo (right) enjoy a break between games of chase in the Yard. goal is to support safe, healthy, and enriching experiences for dogs and their people,” said Lisa Holt, president of the SJI K9 Detection Club. “This partnership allows us to provide a much‑needed resource while supporting the important community missions of both the Family Resource Center and the SJI K9 Detection Club.”

How it Works

Yard use is limited to one SJI K9 Yard member at a time, plus an optional guest, and up to two dogs total per 1 hour booking. The one-time membership fee for approved SJI K9 Yard members is $100.The hourly booking rate for the yard is $20/hr. Interested dog owners can apply for membership. Once you are a member, you can book the yard online via a web browser, or via the Glofox mobile app for Android and Apple phones.

Where the Money Goes

The sign-up and hourly booking fees support the monthly lease for the space, ongoing yard maintenance, insurance, scheduling software, mobile app and website. The SJI K9 Detection Club assumes full responsibility for yard care, insurance coverage, and neighbor relations and will oversee compliance with usage rules designed to maintain a quiet, respectful presence in the neighborhood.

Community Support

The SJI K9 Detection Club also works closely with the Animal Protection Society–Friday Harbor, donating tuition for classes conducted through the APSFH Education Center to support education that helps keep dogs successfully placed in loving homes.
